About Nicole

About Nicole FranksI am Nicole Franks from Langley, British Columbia, Canada, and I compete in The World Fastdraw Association. Fastdraw is the fastest timed sport in the World. Our sport uses hand guns that sit in a holster, we use black powder blanks, or wax bullets.

I started the sport back when I was 11. My dad Bob Franks, saw the sport at our local gun range in Langley, BC where the Thunderbird Fastdraw Club were practicing, and he fell in love with it. A few years later my mom Peggy Franks tried it also and she too loved it. I never had shot a gun in my life and entered in a contest in Alberta. The main reason that made me want to shoot was the fact that I would travel all this way just to sit and watch, and it was really boring for an 11 year old girl. I borrowed a pair of cowboy boots and jeans, I put on a holster for my first time, shot my first shot, at my first contest, all in one day. I came in dead last, but it was a lot of fun. At the age of 12, I entered another contest in Mandam, North Dakota and won my first Chairman contest for A division. I then entered the AA division at 14, and that’s when I started my amazing victories.

In 2000 at 14, I won my first Chairman contest which was in Oregon plus I set 13 World Records. Not even a month after I went to Parachute Colorado to enter the World Title. Never in my dreams did I think I would win the competition. I remember looking at the trophies which was almost the same height as me back then, thinking “Wow that would be cool”. My dad came over too me and said “If you win you know you can’t bring it on the plane”. Completely jokingly I said “If I win the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, I am taking my trophy”. I think my dad actually said “Well we wont have to worry about it”, haha. The feeling of winning was truly amazing, beating competitors that have been in the sport so long and have accomplished so much. The hosts of the contest presented me with an above 4 foot trophy, a handmade bone knife, a tiara for my cowboy hat, and a dozen roses. I felt like a Princess, nothing could top that, not even winning all that I have won now. I did have to carry my trophy all through out the airport. Lots of curious people would stop and talk about the sport, and congratulate me, I felt like a star. My trophy would not fit under my seat or in the overhead bin, so it sat in the First Class coat closet.

I remember thinking after that day, just out of the blue, imagining if I won everything, how boring it would be. Although I have won many titles, NO it is Never Boring, and NO it’s Never Easy. I am involved with many sports including baseball, volleyball, golf, and I am naturally good at every sport I do. But nothing compares to this, the feeling is remarkable. When I am up on the line, I shake, I’m nervous, concentrated, focused, determine, extremely competitive and my Adrenaline is like nothing ever experienced before. When I am up on the line, I think of nothing and just explode when the light come on. Honestly I hardly ever practice. The main reason I don’t practice is because when I practice I never do as good as I do in a competition. What is so great about a championship is the competition. I thrive for pressure, it makes me push harder. In fastdraw I have been blessed to travel to so many extraordinary places, and have met so many interesting people and friends.
